The Kindness Mission

The Kindness is Free Program seeks to empower the next generation by teaching kindness and bringing awareness to its importance in the equal treatment, respect, and consideration of others. Through presentations, pop-ups, and special pledge events, our movement is spreading the imperative of kindness to the Greater Los Angeles area and is inspiring youth to take the charge.

History

The Kindness Program was created and established in 2020 by Lori Milgard and CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of WSGV, JR Dzubak. The Be Kind Program, now named Kindness is Free, was designed to teach students how to look inward, show respect, treat everyone equal, and be considerate of others. The focus is to provide tools that empower students to create a better understanding of Kindness. Through Mindfulness and other activities which can drastically improve social & emotional behavior for the next generation, we aspire to create safer clubs and communities at large. The program quickly found success with club members, parents and their surrounding communities. On August 30th, 2021 the program was highlighted in a feature story* in The Wall Street Journal.

In 2022, the program saw tremendous growth starting with the first ever Kindness is Free Carnival hosted in Boyle Heights. Over 400 club members celebrated kindness with carnival games, food, and a petting zoo, among other activities. Later in 2022, the program expanded to include The Boys and Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Point Hueneme. By the end of 2022, the Kindness is Free Program had begun to do presentations inside the classroom and provided kindness pop-ups at schools, businesses, and corporate partners of the club across the city. In 2023, The Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley and Eastside has had its biggest and most successful year to date by spreading the message of kindness far and wide.

The Kindness Pledge is at the heart of our kindness program and we invite everyone to take part! The pledge is short, universal, and is intended to inspire all members of the community, from club members, children, teens and adults. The pledge touches on the three keys to kindness and gives the person taking the pledge the opportunity to make a public declaration of their promise to be kind. As soon as someone officially pledges, they are gifted a kindness pledge card, commemorating their commitment to the mission.
